[Her voice trembles and she lets out a shaky exhale. She's trying to be strong but it's hard when she's so close to panicking.]

[ There's nothing for a long moment, and then there's a slight crackle; a shuffling sound; movement, maybe. And then a voice, as enthusiastic as he can make it, as normal as he can keep it, but there's something off about it too — the barest edge of strain. ]

[He doesn’t bother with phoning in. The Doctor knows himself well enough to know what his (much younger) bowtie iteration is doing at this hour.
The lab is about the only place for the (young) Doctor's nutty imagination to run wild, building bubble machines that taste like chocolates and hammocks that can do all your homework. This (old) Doctor gets distracted too easily: touching plants, tucking into (someone else’s) snack foods, playing with his Yo-Yo.

[ The doors slide open just enough for the 'chinny' Doctor to poke half of his face through. His hair is in his face, just a little, and he's got a smudge of grease on his nose. ]

- 2021-12-13 01:37 (UTC) - Expand[On Christmas morning, Clara makes sure to leave the Doctor's gift resting on his bed. Even if he doesn't see it when he comes to collect her for a day of fun in the simulation room, he will later on that day. It's not a very large box, something able to balance in the palm of his hand with little trouble. Inside is a folded up piece of paper with her mother's soufflè recipe written down. On the back of the recipe is a little note that reads:
Doctor,
I know you're not necessarily fond of souffles, but I thought I'd share my mother's secret recipe with you anyway. She always told me I could share it with someone that I love, and this felt like the right time to let you in on the family secret. I know that it must feel like time is tearing us apart, that nothing will ever be the same. But always know that I'm your impossible girl at the end of the day. No matter what happens, I will always be your Clara.
Sitting beneath the paper at the bottom of the gift box is one of Clara's rings. It's one that she wears frequently, with a stone that reminds her of the stars that they both love traveling among. She's given him a part of her past, a part of herself at the present, and she's made sure to include something to give him hope for the future.

Except this one is called 1,001 Places to See. Gyeongje, Braccia, and Kilnan all have their own pages. complete with sketches Clara has attempted to recreate the wonders she saw at each place. They're going to fill in the rest of the pages together.

[ a few days after christmas, the doctor will find a small rolled up piece of paper, tied by simple string. it isn't signed with a name, but there's the lingering scent of cigarette smoke, along with the careful scribble of a poem: ]

[That mission gave him more to process than he'd been expecting, and even that much feels like the understatement of a lifetime. It could take weeks, months, who knows how long for all of what happened and what Yamato told him to really sink in and he'll still be left with questions.
And knowing that means that while he takes a day or so to collect his thoughts, he doesn't want to take months to find the Doctor and thank him. For helping, for listening, for having a seemingly endless amount of empathy buried under that goofy exterior. He waits until he find a likely moment for the man to be alone in his quarters, then knocks.]

Horse with white spots down in stable #4. She calls herself Judas Priest. Clever girl but don't let her soft demeanour fool you. I was nearly sent hurdling into the ravine because I wasn't that enthused over her tumbleweed collection.
As a man with a seemingly big hat appreciation, I thought you might appreciate mine for this mission.

It was only a matter of time before the two had to separate from each other’s timeline. He knows how the other’s story ends. As long as one of them can be here to look after Clara and keep River company.
